The presidential and legislative elections :

« The coming presidential and legislative elections, to which we today invite voters for the date of Sunday, October 24th, 2004, will offer a new opportunity to further move forward on this path, within a context of democracy, full transparency and respect of the law, and in light of the measures and legal amendments we have adopted to that end.

On the occasion of these elections, we will offer the desiring friendly countries the opportunity to follow their course and results, so that they can closely realize the degree of maturity and awareness reached by our people as well as our determination to ensure the sincerity of the electoral operations and the respect of the law and of the values of democracy.

To ensure for the coming elections the highest level of transparency, and in addition to the decisions we have already taken to consolidate the prerogatives of the Constitutional Council and also to the revision of the Electoral Code, we have decided to establish a national observatory for elections which will include national figures known for their competence, experience and independence, in order to follow up the course of elections in all their stages ».

Freedom of opinion:

« In the Tunisia of the Change, there is no room for proscription of the right to differ; no one has been tried for his political opinion or choice; justice has looked into no other cases than those involving acts incriminated by the law and falling into the framework of common law since we abolished special jurisdictions in the wake of the Change».
