Mechanisms of promotion and care for women
1- Establishing the Ministry of Women's, Family and Children's Affairs.
2 - Establishing the National Council for Women and the Family, with its three commissions:
- The commission in charge of law enforcement and equality of opportunities;
- The commission in charge of following up the image of women in the media;
- The commission in charge of preparing national and international events concerning women and the family.
3 - Establishing the Center for Research, Studies, Documentation and Information on Women (CREDIF).
4 - Establishing the national committee "women and development".
5 - Establishing the national committee for the promotion of rural women.
An effective presence of women
In public and political life
Women represent 11.5% of the members of the Chamber of Deputies. A woman holds the position of vice-Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies; another woman chairs a parliamentary commission. The number of women in permanent parliamentary commissions has increased twofold.
Women represent 21% of the members of municipal councils. This percentage will reach 25% in 2005, thanks to a presidential decision increasing the rate of women's representation in municipal councils.
Women constitute 13.6% of government members. 25% of the Secretaries of State are women.
Two women hold the position of advisor to the President of the Republic.
A woman holds the position of first president of the Court of Accounts.
A woman holds the position of administrative ombudswoman.
Women represent 16% of the members of the Economic and Social Council.
A woman has been appointed to the position of governor.
12% of the members of ministerial cabinets are women.
A woman has been appointed to the position of state prosecutor.
22% of positions of responsibility in the civil service are held by women; 23 women hold the position of director- general.
The number of women associations has considerably increased.
Women's presence in the executives bureaus of professional organizations has been reinforced : 12% in the Tunisian Union of Industry, Commerce and Handicrafts; 1.9% in the Tunisian Union of Agriculture and Fisheries.
Two women are members of the RCD Political Bureau.
Women represent 26.4% of the RCD Central Committee.
